Thankfulness Litter- 7 Weeks Old

We are in a very busy season of puppyhood these days! Very busy and very adorable. 🙂 The puppies are now fully weaned, and they are enjoying their delicious Life’s Abundance Puppy Food. Since coming off momma’s milk, they have also started on NuVet Plus Immune System Supplement. This helps bolster their young immune systems which go through a very vulnerable stage after the effects of momma’s milk and colostrum wear off. As always, they are doing very well on their new diet! Lots of energy and no tummy or digestive upsets, which means all is well on the inside. They have bright eyes and beautiful coats, which means all is well on the outside, too!

They puppies have had their health exams, got their first vaccinations, and got to experience their first baths and ear cleanings! (They were less than enthusiastic about that last one.) It has definitely been an exciting few weeks.

The puppies are reaching the point where they have SO MUCH energy! Running, jumping, sniffing, and chewing are some of the most important things for these little guys. Watching them explore and experience new things is so much fun! I love to introduce my puppies to as many things as possible during the two months that they live here. The more they see, hear, and experience now will help them adjust more easily to new homes. They have gotten to hear normal household sounds- vacuum cleaner, children, doors, banging kettles, and music. They have gotten to see and hear normal outside things, as well- lawn mower, traffic, other dogs, chickens, etc. I’ll continue to broaden their small horizons as much as I can in this last week that they are here.

I briefly mentioned chewing… Puppies love to chew. Just like teething babies love something to gnaw on, chewing feels amazing to little puppies. This litter has been burning through my supply of Porky Puffs and Buffalo Bully Sticks. They absolutely LOVE them. (It’s either the treats or my toes. I’ve opted for the treats.) Doxa, as the biggest puppy, usually manages to get control of a Porky Puff by shoving her smaller siblings out of the way and then running away with it so she can chew it all by herself. (In these pictures, though, it’s Saba who got her own Porky Puff!)

When you bring home a new puppy or if you have an adult dog who still loves to chew, you will thank yourself for keeping good, healthy chews on hand! It keeps them occupied and busy, it keeps them from chewing or destroying things they shouldn’t, and it’s very good for their dental health. Chewing helps puppies to lose their baby teeth and work in the adult ones, and chewing is an excellent (and easy) way to keep adult teeth clean.

But I always give this suggestion with a word of warning. Not all dog chews are healthy- or safe! If you have an aggressive chewer, plastic or rubber chew toys can be questionable. (My Golden Retriever hasn’t yet found a toy she can’t rip apart and eat.) And not all “edible” chews are healthy. Many of them, especially raw hides, are very hard on the digestive system. Buy with caution. I suggest edible chews with healthy ingredients and no preservatives or artificial colors or flavors. My favorite Life’s Abundance products, hand-down, are their chewing treats- Porky Puffs, Buffalo Bully Sticks, and Buffalo Lungs. Safe, healthy, and AMAZING. The Buffalo Lungs are in a big bag (great value for the price!), but they are a slightly softer chew. The Porky Puffs and Bully Sticks are harder treats that will keep a puppy busy for a few days. You can see all the different treats and chews here.

Crate training is also a big deal at this age. I crate the puppies for short periods to help them get used to the idea of a crate and establish the habit of not going potty in the crate. Usually when I first put them in the crate, one of two of them will cry and whine piteously for a while. But a good dose of tough love wins out. Within half an hour or so, all of them give up and snuggle together to sleep. Relaxation and rest is what I like to see for crate time. The crate is supposed to be a place of peace and quiet, where a puppy (and older dog) can go to rest and take a break. In my opinion, crate training is the best way to work at house training a puppy.

Although, this is undoubtedly a very busy stage with puppies, it is probably my favorite. There is so much to teach and practice, and they are simply a lot of fun!

I hope you are all having a wonderful week! I’m going to head outside and enjoy some enthusiastic puppy kisses before the afternoon is spent!

The Thankfulness Litter- Almost 4 Weeks Old

It’s been one month with this litter already! And they are all doing fantastic! Doxa still leads the pack in weight. She’s over five pounds, while her three siblings are about four and a quarter to four and a half pounds.

Now is the time that the fun really begins. In the past week, the puppies have really begun changing and becoming aware of the world around them. They have gone from sleeping nearly all the time, to exploring their whelping box and playing with each other. They still sleep a lot, but they are certainly reaching a new and more active stage of puppyhood.

We have been spending some time working on potty training now that the puppies are able to get around. I gave them access to a small area outside their nest filled with shredded newspaper. This gives them a place to do their business away from the sleeping area, which is a natural instinct puppies have. I try to harness this natural desire to leave the nest to pee and poop and teach them the habit of going in a particular place. By doing this, I give them some foundational crate training skills, and it helps to keep their sleeping area much cleaner. In another week or so, I will give the puppies access to a large play area. I will wait until I feel like they have a good grasp of the potty area, so that they will continue to use the designated potty area and keep the new play area clean, as well. It’s always a work in progress; but the more they learn now, the easier crate training and house training will be for their new families!

Here you can see the puppies exploring the whole pen. I labeled each section of the pen, if you can read my chicken scratch. Also note the wet newspaper in the potty area- that’s a mark of success!

Next week begins a very fun part of raising puppies- weaning! The puppies will be ready to begin eating solid food. As always, my puppies get nothing but the best food. Nutrition plays a HUGE role in puppies’ health! My adults and my puppies very rarely get sick, and I attribute that to excellent nutrition and healthy activity levels.

These cute little guys will be starting on Life’s Abundance Small & Medium Breed Puppy food.

A few of the things I love the most about this particular kind of food (and I have tried several brands in my years as a breeder) are:

*It contains only high quality proteins. Protein is essential for all bodily functions (brain, heart, muscles, skin, coat, bones, etc), and not all protein is created equally. Life’s Abundance has quality controlled protein sources of chicken meal (which is more nutrient dense than whole chicken) and eggs.

*It is enriched with DHA and contains guarantee probiotics, prebiotic fiber, antioxidants, and a complete array of essential vitamins and minerals.

*It hasn’t been sitting on a store shelf for months! Life’s Abundance makes their food in small, weekly batches. This means when I order food, I know it is as fresh as possible, and fresh food is more nutrient rich.

*It has all of the good stuff and none of the bad! No artificial flavors or colors. No corn or wheat or corn/wheat glutens. None. Ever. Corn and wheat are very difficult for dogs to digest, meaning they can irritate the digestive system and provide very little nutritional benefit.

This isn’t just “puppy food.” This is a top-of-the-line, nutritious diet. I have seen the positive effects of good nutrition, and I simply cannot overstate the importance.

The other fun part of this age is that my daughter finally gets to play with the puppies. She has been able to hold them briefly, but now the puppies are able to interact a little bit. This also means, I hear her pleading, toddler voice ask me about a million times every day, “Mommy, let’s go play with the puppies!” And thus begins the puppies’ socialization with children. 🙂 The rough little hands, unpredictably loud and shrill voices, and the fast movements of children are excellent experiences for puppies! Not only do they learn to tolerate it, but they grow to love it, too! Eventually, my job changes from protecting the puppies’ from my daughter’s excited play to protecting my daughter from the puppies’ excited play. 🙂

I hope you all have a good weekend, and remember to be thankful for each new day!

Puppy Update: 5 Weeks Old!

If I have learned anything in the past few weeks it has been that everyone needs a Golden Irish. Seriously, these puppies are ADORABLE! I see so many of the great attributes of both parent breeds all mixed together in a litter of floppy-eared puppy sweetness.

The puppies have the playful and confident Irish Setter nature, but it’s toned down just a bit by the affectionate and gentle Golden Retriever personality. All these puppies want to do is play and love on whoever is close by. When I bring food to the puppies in the morning, I am greeting with happy barks and wagging tails, and my feet are swarmed by a mob of fluffy, wiggly puppies. (Not a bad start to the day. I highly recommend it!)

And I’m certainly not the only one enjoying the puppies! At least a dozen times a day, my daughter asks to go play with them. This is definitely one of the biggest benefits of family-raised puppies. Every day the puppies are loved on (and carted around by) a toddler. Although my daughter does very well with the puppies, she’s still a toddler. Gentleness is a tough concept to grasp. The puppies become very accustomed to being picked up and squeezed by little arms. They aren’t frightened by her loud squeals and giggles. In fact, they learn to LOVE it!

IMG_1164IMG_1193

Besides playing and enjoying all the sweetness, there is a lot of work going on with the puppies, as well! At five weeks old, the puppies are well on their way to being weaned. I begin weaning at four weeks old, and I transition them slowly off of mama’s milk with the goal of having them fully weaned between six and seven weeks old.

Right now, the puppies are eating Life’s Abundance Large Breed Puppy Food mixed with raw goat milk. For the first while, the food needs to be softened. Once the puppies are used to chewing and using those needle-sharp teeth, I stop adding the goat milk. I like using goat milk over just water, because goat milk adds nutrients, protein, and healthy fat. This is beneficial for the puppies who are slower to wean.

Once the puppies are weaned off of their mother’s milk, their immunity is weakened. Because of this, each of the puppies will be started on NuVet Plus Immune System Supplements. These supplements help build and protect the young immune systems. Because of the antioxidants in the supplement, it’s also beneficial for the puppies to be receiving them during while getting their puppy shots. Some studies have shown that puppies who have received antioxidant supplements are able to give a better immune system response to their puppy vaccines.

In addition to the weaning process, the puppies are continuing their early training and socializing. They are getting to interact with our other dogs, and they are getting to experience new sights and sounds like lawn mowers, thunder, and vacuum cleaners. Next week, I will also begin crate training! I’m very pleased with how the puppies are doing with their potty training so far; and I’m sure that by eight weeks old, they will have a solid foundation to begin the house breaking process at their new homes.

This litter has been a lot of fun so far, and Jade has done a wonderful job as a first time momma! I am looking forward to the weeks ahead with these sweet little pups!

Homemade Puppy Formula

As promised, here is the homemade puppy formula recipe that I use for my puppies. It has served me very well in the times that I have had to use it, and I highly recommend it to anyone finding themselves needing to bottle feed a puppy! The recipe is not original with me, but I want to pass it along as a help others!

Homemade Puppy Formula

10 oz fresh raw goat milk
1 cup plain whole milk yogurt
1 raw egg yolk
1/4 tsp corn syrup

Whisk together and store in refrigerator up to a week. Feed 1 ml per ounce of body weight every three hours. (Helpful conversion: 5 ml = 1 tsp) Ex. A puppy weighing 10 oz should receive 10 ml (which is 2 tsp) every three hours. This recipe can also be fed to the mother, as it is good for her milk supply.

While you can certainly feed puppies straight raw goat milk, I love adding these ingredients. Interestingly, dog milk has approximately twice the fat and protein per ounce that cow or goat milk does. (Cow milk should not be given to puppies, as they cannot digest it well!) So to make sure puppies are getting the proper amount of fat and protein at each feeding, it’s important to add the yogurt and egg yolk. These ingredients help give the formula a similar fat and protein content in each serving as they would get from their mom.

I get my goat milk from Russell Homestead (https://www.russellhomestead.com/). Not only do I use goat milk in formula, but I also use it to help wean my puppies by softening their kibble in it. It’s a very enticing flavor to get the puppies started drinking and eating from a bowl. It’s also a way to make sure the puppies that are slower to pick up the chewing and eating are still getting good calories and staying hydrated.

That’s all for today! Check back next week for an update on the puppies, and have a wonderful weekend!

Six Weeks Old

We have now entered the stage where the puppies are fully active and independent. It is a very fun and interactive stage! Here is an overview of what the puppies have been doing in the past two weeks.

-We have nearly completed the weaning process. They still get a little bit of milk from Mia, but they are mostly transitioned onto Life’s Abundance Small & Medium Breed Puppy Food. The food is still softened to make it easier to chew; but within another week, they will be crunching away on the unsoftened kibble. We will also be starting them on NuVet Plus supplements in a few days. Once they are fully weaned off of momma’s milk, puppies’ immune systems become very vulnerable. The immunity they received from their mother’s colostrum (early milk that’s full of antibodies to fight infection and diseases) is already waning, and they become susceptible to bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections. In fact, a puppy’s immune system does not become fully mature until 18-24 months old. To combat this, we use NuVet Plus, which is an immune system supplement designed to build and protect a dog’s immune system.

-We are continuing potty training. I have the puppies on a fairly strict schedule to help them master the potty training. For some reason, it seemed to take this litter a little bit longer than some to catch on to the “potty area” concept. However, we have FINALLY gotten to a point where I say that they all get it and are doing well. I’d say 90% of the messes end up in the right place. Woohoo! That means a lot less clean up for me! (And with my growing belly, clean up is becoming a bit cumbersome!)

-The puppies are getting to experience new sounds. Each day I try to expose to the puppies to some new sounds. I often use YouTube videos designed to desensitize dogs frightening noises. The idea is that playing these sounds at a low volume helps the puppies become accustomed to the strange sounds, and then they are much less likely to startle and become frightened when they hear similar sounds in real life. They have heard traffic noises, fireworks, and thunder. They also get to hear normal house hold noises like a noisy toddler, vacuuming, etc. All these things are good exposure and socialization for young puppies, and it gives them safe and positive experiences with noises that can sometimes be frightening.

-The puppies are also getting to experience some new toys and textures! They have a variety of toys that they enjoy playing with, but the most sought after one of all is a simple old sock. It’s soft, stretchy, and GREAT for tug-of-war. The other prized possessions are some of the Life’s Abundance chews I give them on occasion. They have had Buffalo Bully Sticks and Porky Puffs, and they LOVE them! (They will even abandon the sock for the treats.) Having healthy chews for young puppies is so helpful! It keeps them occupied, quiet, and gives them a good way to get all that puppy teething and chewing out of their systems. All puppies chew, and it’s important to give them healthy and constructive things to chew on.

-We had a brief reprieve of winter weather last week and the puppies got the chance to go outside for the first time. They had a blast! They loved sniffing in the dirt and grass, chewing on twigs and leaves, and simply getting some new sights and smells.

And here are some pictures to wrap up the post! Take special note of the pictures of Hobbes and Micky. They are the only two sweet boys that are still available!

Four Weeks Old

So much has changed with the puppies in the last two weeks, and they are becoming a lot of fun! (A lot more work, but that’s okay.) I am beginning to see personalities, and the puppies can finally play for more than a minute or two at a time before getting tired out. They show interest in people, and they are starting to explore their world by sniffing, licking, and, of course, chewing.

Here are some of the highlights of the past two weeks:

  • Potty training! I use the Misty Method of early house training, which establishes a sleep area, a play/eating area, and a potty area. This gives the puppies a solid foundation for crate and house training once they go to their new homes. I’ll be honest, though- this litter has been a bit slower than some to catch on to potty training. Things are improving, but I had a very frustrating few days where they decided to sleep in the stinky potty box and pee on their bed. 😦 After a lot of insistence, I have convinced most of them to stop peeing on their bed. They are certainly far from perfect, but I am seeing definite progress.
  • Weaning time! This really shows how much the puppies have developed. They are now ready to begin transitioning off of Momma’s milk. I start with one meal a day and slowly work up to three meals a day, while decreasing the number of times they nurse from Mia. Right now, the food is softened while the puppies master how to chew. Because nutrition is such a huge part of a puppy’s overall health and well-being, I am very particular about the food I give them. For healthy puppies, we must start with a healthy diet. The puppies are starting on Life’s Abundance Small & Medium Breed Puppy Food. This food is jam-packed full of vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients. There are high quality proteins (so important!), DHA, antioxidants, guaranteed probiotics, prebiotic fiber, Omega-3, dietary fiber, and a host of healthy fruits and vegetables. I find that my puppies do very well on this food. With my past litters, I have not had trouble with vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, or constipation. I attribute a lot of that to Life’s Abundance food. Its excellent nutrition does very well for a puppy’s young and sensitive digestive system. SMPuppySm

Coming up in the next couple of weeks, we will continue weaning the puppies with the goal of having them fully weaned on unsoftened kibble by 7 weeks old. The puppies will also be getting their first vaccinations, their health exams, and they will be introduced to lots of new sights and sounds. I try to expose them to a variety of household and outdoor experiences to help get them accustomed to strange sights and sounds. This helps foster a calm and confident temperament. Of course, there is still a lot of socializing that needs to happen after the puppies leave my home at 8 weeks old, but I try to give them the best start that I can.

Also, one of the best things that I can do for the puppies in the next month is play with them! Simple, positive human interaction is one of the easiest and best ways to socialize young puppies. Reese is certainly having a lot of fun playing with the puppies now that they do more than just sleep. I have given them a few toys chew on and play with, but they truly enjoy getting human attention, whether its snuggling on an open lap, getting a belly scratch, or playing a little game of chase.

Yesterday, I took some pictures of the puppies. The individual pictures went very well (you can see them here), so I decided to try a group shot of all of the puppies. I have seen adorable pictures of puppies all lined up and looking sweetly at the camera. I thought surely I could get a picture like that. However, I learned that this is not a one-person job.

Perhaps I’ll try this again another day when I have someone to help me. 🙂

And one more picture for today. This little pup was SO tired after getting his picture taken. I hope the rest of your week is as relaxing as this!

Munchy Monday: Treat Comparisons

Not all treats are created equally. It’s easy to think that because treats are a smaller part of a dog’s diet, that their nutritional quality isn’t as important.

But what we give our pets as treats DOES matter! Healthy treats can contribute wonderful nutrients and can be a source of great chewing entertainment. Many of the leading brands of dog treats have a number of unsavory ingredients, which at best are useless fillers and at worst can contribute to health problems.

I broke down the ingredients of just a few of the common dog treat brands from Chewy.com. These are brands I used to think are okay for my dogs, but I now try to stay away from them.

Greenies Dental Treats Original

The first three ingredients in this dog treat are: Wheat Flour, Glycerin, Wheat Gluten.

Life’s Abundance does not ever use wheat or wheat gluten in their food or treats. While some whole grains are beneficial for dogs, there are some grains, especially processed ones, that should be avoided. Wheat and corn are two of the most common ingredients known to cause food allergies in dogs. A dog treat with two of the top three ingredients being wheat and wheat gluten can hardly be considered a healthy or nutritious treat.

Also, glycerin is a sweetener. When making treats, there are MUCH healthier alternatives to make a treat taste sweet and appealing to dogs. Some Life’s Abundance treats contain fruits or peanut butter. These kinds of ingredients add natural sweetness, as well as vitamins, minerals, and even some antioxidants.

Want some better alternatives? Life’s Abundance Porky Puffs Chews and Buffalo Bully Sticks are excellent chews that can help keep teeth clean. Also, Life’s Abundance Gourmet Dental Treats are great for maintaining teeth and gum health, and they contain probiotics!

Pedigree Dentastix

The first three ingredients are: Rice Flour, Wheat Starch, Glycerin. Also included in the ingredients are the preservatives Sodium Tripolyphosphate and Potassium Sorbate.

Again you see the wheat and the glycerin in the top ingredients. That doesn’t put things off to a good start for me.

When it comes to preservatives, did you know that there are much healthier alternatives? Many times, big dog treat suppliers use harsh, artificial preservatives to get the maximum shelf life for their products. While these preservatives do give a long shelf-life, they can also compromise the nutritional quality of the treats. There are other natural, gentle preservatives that can be used instead. Some examples, according to Daily Puppy, are “vitamin E, commonly referred to as mixed tocopherols, vitamin C, known as ascorbic acid, and plant extracts such as rosemary.”

Life’s Abundance never uses artificial preservatives in their food or treats. Nutritional quality is more important than extended shelf-life.

Milk-Bone Small MacroSnacks

Ingredients: Wheat Flour, Meat and Bone Meal, Sugar, Dried Poultry By-Products Digest, Cooked Bone Marrow Beef Fat (Preserved with Tocopherols), Salt, Corn Starch, Annatto Color, Red Iron Oxide (Color), Red 40, Sodium Metabisulfite (Used As A Preservative).

Okay, this one is bad. First ingredient is wheat flour. Third ingredient is plain old sugar. Further on you see corn starch- not good. Then to end the list, there are artificial colors and preservatives. The treats looks so cute and tasty, but they are so very unhealthy!

Do you want some healthy treat alternatives? Life’s Abundance has so many delicious and nutritious treat options!

Porky Puffs, Buffalo Meat Strips, Buffalo Bully Sticks, and Buffalo Lung Fillets are all excellent, single-ingredient chews. Freeze-dried Turkey Hearts are a great soft single-ingredient treat.

Antioxidant Health Bars are the best-smelling doggie bars I’ve ever seen! They are made from oatmeal, peanut butter, fruits, and veggies for a treat full of antioxidants to help support a healthy immune system.

Tasty Rewards are yummy bite-sized lamb and chicken pieces perfect for training sessions.

Gourmet Dental Treats are a mix are oatmeal, honey, and peanut butter, fortified with calcium and vitamin C. This treat contains probiotics and supports teeth and gum health.

Are you looking for a grain-free treat? The Grain-Free Turkey & Berry Chewies are a great option! This savory recipe features turkey, turkey liver, pumpkin, and berries.

Order any of these treats from my Life’s Abundance page: https://www.lifesabundance.com/Pets/Treats/DogTreats.aspx?realname=20552921&cat=0&hdr=&Ath=False&crt=0&breadcrumb=DogTreats_v11%28Pet_Base%29

Your pup will thank you for it! Mine certainly do!

My Shop is Open!

I am BEYOND excited! Kristen’s Happy Tails shop is now open!

During the last few months, I spent hours learning about various pet company brands and the products they offer. Quality and safety are of the utmost importance to me. When I am giving food, treats, or supplements to my dogs and puppies, I want to know that what they are getting is wholesome, safe, and will keep them at their optimal health. When I get my dogs collars and toys, I want to know that I am getting something durable and good quality. I put a lot of energy and consideration into the products that I chose to have in my shop, and I am thrilled with what I have to offer to my puppies’ new families! I may not have a wide variety, but what I do have is guaranteed to be some of the absolute best pet products on the market.

This shop is a way to provide more resources to my puppies’ new families. I am often asked for recommendations on food, crates, and toys; and I wanted to do more than simply give advice. Now, my puppies’ new families can purchase full puppy packs for their new friend! I also want to be able to connect with and offer support to other local breeders, who, like me, want to get their puppies off to a great start. I want to provide excellent products and support to local dog owners who want to keep their special pups strong and healthy (and maybe spoil them a bit, too).

I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent building and preparing my shop. I’m eager to see where this adventure leads! As most of you know, I am always up for a good dog adventure, and I love to learn and connect with other dog people.

Here is a brief over view of some of the products and brands that you can find in my shop. (You can view all the products under the Shop tab or by clicking here.):

  • (Of course) Life’s Abundance- This is my favorite brand of dog food, and I know it helps to keep my dogs and puppies healthy from the inside out with it’s science-based, holistic nutrition. Also, the treats they have are AMAZING! My dogs nearly take off my whole hand when I start dishing out their yummy (and super healthy) treats! (Learn more about Life’s Abundance here.)
  • NuVet- This is a new addition to my nutrition program that I am very excited to share about! NuVet Plus is an immune system supplement which helps protect and build a puppy’s immune system, allowing the puppy to remain healthier and also give a better immune system response to vaccinations. It’s also an amazing supplement for adult dogs, helping them to remain in optimal health and protecting them from getting run-down by environmental toxins. (Learn more about NuVet here.)
  • Lupine- This is a big name in the dog industry! Lupine has been making amazing collars and leashes for over 25 years. They offer a life-time, even if chewed, guarantee on their products. The collars and leashes are durable and come in fun colors and patterns.
  • Furhaven- I have stocked some beautiful and unique memory-foam dog beds from Furhaven. These beds have an easily removed cover for convenient washing. I also have some very soft and comfy beds that are designed to fit perfectly in crates.
  • P.L.A.Y.- This is an environmentally friendly company that sells a variety of durable, stimulating, and amazingly cute dog toys! I can certainly attest to the fact that no dog toy is indestructible, but these toys can endure a good amount of tough love and play.
  • Kong- Want to talk durable? You can hardly find more durable toys than Kong toys. These fun, classic toys are great for large breeds or a particularly destructive dog. (Like my lovable hunk Jade, who destroys anything she can find. She ate one of my favorite hard cover books last week, much to my annoyance.) Currently, I have a limited variety of Kong toys, but I plan to expand my selection in 2019!

I hope that gives you a good idea of what I have in my shop. Have a happy Monday!

Munchy Monday: Life’s Abundance Ear Care Formula

Okay, so maybe this Munchy Monday post isn’t so “munchy,” but it’s still about a great Life’s Abundance product. 🙂

Say hello to Life’s Abundance Ear Care Formula!EarCare

This ear cleaner is gentle and soothing, and it helps to make ear cleaning a less traumatizing experience- for my dogs, anyway! It cleans the ears and eliminates odor without any painful stinging! It is also made in the USA. The two first ingredients are water and Aloe Vera, which helps show how gentle this cleaner is. There are also numerous plant extracts included in the formula to create a safe and soothing cleaner.

All of our dogs have floppy ears, which makes them more prone to ear infections. The two main ways to prevent ear infections is to, first, have a good diet to help their immune system; and secondly, keep the ears clean.

There are a lot of great ear cleaners out there. One of the brands I have used a lot in the past (and still do use some) is Epi-Otic. Epi-Otic is a great cleaner, and it certainly gets the job done! However, it is strong. My dogs HATE it. It smells strong; and based on their reaction, I think it stings. When I switched to the Life’s Abundance ear cleaner, I noticed that they didn’t give such a dramatic reaction. In fact, they hardly fight it at all. It obviously feels much better in their ears. And that’s what I love about it. It’s so gentle, but yet very effective.

Now, keep in mind, prevention is best when it comes to your dog’s ears. I like to use Life’s Abundance Ear Care Formula as my regular weekly ear cleaning solution. Whether or not my dogs’ ears look dirty, I try to clean them on a regular basis to prevent any build-up.

To properly clean your dog’s ears, begin by shaking the bottle well. Gently apply enough drops into the ear canal so that it is moistened. Massage the base of the ear canal to help loosen wax. Remove the liquid, dissolved wax, and dirt with cotton or facial tissue. Clean the applicator tip thoroughly after each use. Do not use cotton swabs or insert pointed objects into the ear.

If build-up has occurred or you’re suspicious an infection may be brewing, Life’s Abundance Ear Care Formula can be used twice a day for 4-5 days. However, if the ear still looks dirty or irritated, your dog may need something stronger or even some antibiotics to clear it up.

If your pup needs something to keep his or her ears clean, you may want to give Life’s Abundance Ear Care Formula a try. Here’s to happy ears and happy pups!

Puppy Update!

I’m pretty sure each litter we have grows faster than the previous one. Our sweet setter pups are already nearing five weeks old! These sweet red babies are becoming so energetic and fun! They still sleep a lot, but they are slowly demanding more and more attention and interaction. It’s such a fun time!

IMG_7546

Here is a recap of the last two weeks.

  1. The puppies are beginning the weaning process. Yay! At this point, the care of the puppies slowly shifts from Mama Duchess to me. In the last weeks, I have been caring for Duchess, providing clean bedding, and monitoring the puppies’ growth. Other than that, Duchess has done the rest. As the puppies begin to wean and become more independent, I’ll take over a lot of the care- feeding, cleaning, training, socializing, etc. This is where my work truly begins! I always start the puppies off with raw goat milk with a little bit of softened and mashed kibble. Goat milk is a really amazing thing! I’ve heard it called the “universal milk replacer.” Many kinds of animals are able to digest and live off goat milk. It’s much gentler on the digestive system than cow milk. When bottle feeding a puppy, I chose to use raw goat milk over store bought puppy formula, because it’s easy to digest and it contains good bacteria that a store-bought formula would not have. To help puppies learn to eat solid food, I soak kibble in goat milk for the first while. They love the taste, and the liquid is easy for them to lap up while they practice chewing the harder kibble. This insures that the even the puppies that are a bit slower at picking up the chewing part are getting plenty of fat, protein, and nutrients. It also helps keep them hydrated as they transition off of mama’s milk.
  2. Socializing also starts at this age. I am trying something new with this litter. I found a playlist of videos on YouTube specifically for desensitizing dogs to noises. Each video focuses on certain sounds, like rain and thunder, cars and trucks, vacuums and household noises, fireworks, crying babies, and other noises that dogs may find frightening. The idea is that if you play these kinds of sounds at a low volume it helps to get them used to it, making it less likely for them to startle or be frightened when they experience these sounds in real life. So for an hour or two a day, I am playing some of these sounds tracks to help get the puppies used to a variety of different noises.
  3. We are working hard on potty training. Right now, the puppies do excellent with not peeing on their bed, but they still often pee anywhere in their play area. I’m trying to get them to use a certain area for bathroom needs, so that the play area stays dry and clean. That’s going to take a few more days of messy work, but we will get there!
  4. The puppies got the chance to venture into the great outdoors for the first time this week. They were THRILLED! However, the weather has turned cold and snowy again, so it will be a few days until the puppies are able to go outside again.img_1345img_1334img_1354img_1360
  5. Remember the little sweetheart with the torn ear? That was April. This is what her ear looks like now.

If you look closely, you can tell her ear is not quite perfect. The stitches only stayed in a day or two, but the glue the vet also put on held fairly well. The end result is an ear that is MUCH better than it was right after birth, but not totally perfect. The back of her ear has a slightly uneven edge. However, as the feathering comes in on her ear, I don’t think it will be very visible (if at all) as an adult. Even now, if you didn’t know anything was wrong, you would never notice. At any rate, I am very pleased with how her ear healed.

Other than that, we have just been playing with the puppies and enjoying the brief time we get to spend with them! Five of the seven puppies have homes, which is so exciting! We still have two boys that are available. I hope you all have a wonderful day, and I hope all of my north-eastern friends are enjoying the snow!
